Snap a bookshelf, get a searchable 3D library

Linus Ekenstam had Astra one-shot it over breakfast: photograph a bookshelf and get an instant, real-time 3D version of it — searchable, and linked to Goodreads.

The input is one photo of a bookshelf. The output is that shelf, in real-time 3D, searchable, and linked to Goodreads. Astra one-shotted it while Linus Ekenstam was eating breakfast.

The 3D is the eye-catching part, but the hard part is underneath. A photo of book spines is a messy source of truth: titles at odd angles, decorative fonts, half the books leaning. Turning that into records you can search and link is the actual product; the shelf is how you can tell the records came from your photo rather than a catalogue someone typed in.

A personal library tool used to be a weekend project at best. Here it is a breakfast.

Instant digital version of your bookshelf 🤯 I spit out my coffee after Astra one-shotted this during breakfast. Just snap a photo of a bookshelf and get an instant real-time 3D bookshelf. Searchable. Linked to goodreads. Wow. https://t.co/YyLt9IHJ9F
