A photo becomes a scene you can set type into
Erik Natzke's Three.js prototype, built with Astra and Apple SHARP, turns a 2D photo into a Gaussian splat. Type passes in front of and behind the subject, using inferred depth.
Erik Natzke's prototype has a precise trick. Astra and Apple SHARP turn a flat photo into a 3D Gaussian splat. Then typographic objects — a ring of type, in the clip — pass both in front of the subject and behind them, using depth the photo did not come with.
A splat that only spins is a parlor trick. A splat you can occlude against is a scene. The type has to disappear behind a shoulder and come back out, which means the inferred depth is accurate enough to composite. Three.js is where that composite happens.
The photograph is raw material for layout.
